"Taking it All " Chapter 23 He was with a woman. That was interesting. Yuki Matoto. Heero thought for sure that Trowa mentioned Yuki as a man. Pushing that aside, he approached the couple. Yuki was a medium built lady. Looking at her gave Heero the impression that she spent a lot of time at the gym. She had a beautiful smile, that she seemed to enjoy sharing. She was cute, and if situations were different, Heero would have considered flirting with her. "Sorry I'm late." Heero stated as he came within earshot. Trowa had already noticed Heero's approach and didn't react much. Yuki, on the other hand, nearly knocked over her drink. Trowa smirked at the scene. Heero carried a habit of surprising civilians, even when he wasn't trying. "I didn't mean to startle you." "It's okay." She looked up at Heero and a familiar look passed through her eyes. Heero had long gotten use to seeing similar expressions. "So you're Heero Yuy? I've heard quiet a bit about you." "Oh yeah?" "Yeah. You're quiet the lady killer. At first, I thought you were being overrated, but now. . .I think I better watch myself. I could fall for you." She snickered as her green eyes ran Heero's body. They suggested negative thoughts, and Heero knew that whatever rumors Yuki heard didn't come from Trowa. "I'm just curious; who, exactly, has been talking to you?" "A girl has to have her secrets. Aside, this is a business meeting, and since you've arrived, we should probably get started." That said, she grabbed a small purse from the table and pushed to a stand. "Where'd you guys find her?" Heero asked as he and Trowa followed a few steps behind Yuki. "She came highly recommended from Ceria." "Ceria, hmm? Isn't she the only of Quatre's sister that like you?" "Yeah." "This wedding's going to be interesting." "What's that suppose to mean?" "Twenty-eight head hunters, and no where to run." Trowa's gaze lowered and Heero guessed he could tell Trowa wasn't looking forward to that. Holidays were easy to handle, since all Trowa had to do was slip away when no one was looking. At those times, Quatre was intended to be the center of attention; but with this wedding, both men were going to be expected to stay together. "It's only one night. I'm sure I can survive." "Then there's Catherine." "I'm not sure she'll be coming." "Why wouldn't she?" Trowa didn't respond as he kept his gaze from Heero. Somehow, he understood why Trowa was going to be quite. "You are inviting her, right." "It's just that she's on Earth right now. . .and I have a feeling that things would get ugly between her and Quatre's sisters." "So you're going to exclude her. Trowa she's practically your sister." "It's not that big a deal." "So I guess Wu Fei and I should stay away too, since we tend to stick up for you as well." Trowa looked up at this comment. He wasn't too surprised that Heero said it; it wasn't out of character. What was out of character was the snide attitude behind the words. "Heero, I really do want you there. I want you as my best man." Heero turned from Trowa's pleading eyes. "I'll go, just for you, but I refuse to be the best man." "Heero?" "Bab-I don't think this is the greatest decision you've ever made, and I can't stand by your side in full support of it." "That doesn't make any sense." "I don't think you're really happy with this." "How can you say that? Quatre and I have been together for three years. If we weren't happy with one another, then we wouldn't have lasted this long." "Then I guess you must have been really happy with the mercenaries." Trowa stopped in his tracks and glared at Heero in appall. Yuki glanced over her shoulder toward the two men. They were having their own little conversation and probably didn't hear a single word that she had just said. A small smile pulled her lips. Maybe she didn't have to worry about Heero at all. Despite the fact that she heard of him as a lady killer, something in the way he was looking at Trowa made her feel that maybe that rumor had died. Smiling, she stopped in her tracks and turned to face the men. "Well, I can see that this hall hasn't caught your interest." She teased, breaking through their conversation. Both men looked up at her, as if remembering that she was still there. "I know of another place though that isn't far from here. Maybe I should show you that place instead. That is, if, I can tear your eyes from one another." She giggled and turned again to continue on her way. Trowa turned his gaze from Heero, as Heero did him. In truth, neither of them seemed to have realized that they were completely ignoring Yuki. "Miss. Matoto, could you give us a few minutes." Trowa asked politely, and Heero couldn't help but feel that he was listening to Quatre excuse them, rather than Trowa. Yuki nodded and Trowa turned to lead Heero in a more private area. Not knowing what else to do, Heero followed. When he felt they were alone, Trowa stopped and spun to face Heero. His green eyes, for the first time ever, were filled with anger directed toward Heero. "What's gotten into you?" "I was a little out of line back there, sorry." "I don't care if you were out of line, I would like to know what prompt you to say such a thing." Heero leaned against the nearest wall, wondering what to do. The road to re-winning Trowa wasn't suppose to start by getting him angry. It was just a little hard since everytime they met in the last couple of days, Trowa had been somewhat distracted by something dealing with the wedding. This was, perhaps, the only time in those few days that he held Trowa's undivided attention. "Heero?" He wasn't sure how to answer Trowa's question. At least, not to the extent of aiding to his already brewing anger. Trowa crossed his arms over his chest and studied Heero closely. He had been acting strangely the pass few days. What was more strange was the fact that in those days, Heero had 'accidentally' slipped and called Trowa 'baby' a few times. In fact, he nearly did a few moments ago. Trowa wasn't sure where or why his friend picked up that habit, but it made him feel slightly uncomfortable every time it spilled from Heero's lips. "I guess I'm just being selfish. I'm too use to having your full attention every time we were together. Now, all that seems to matter is this wedding. I can understand about the planning and everything, it just seems that Quatre's leaving everything to you, and we both know that deep down you really don't give a rat's ass about how it all looks. I hate that he's putting all this on you when you don't even want it." Trowa sighed at his friend's explanation. Heero hit the nail on the head. If it truly was up to Trowa, a court wedding with just a few people would be fine for him. . .it was Quatre and his family. "I'm sorry about ignoring you like this." "It just doesn't make any sense why you have to deal with so much if he hired a wedding planner to decide on these things." "I promise, once the wedding is over, I'll make it up to you." "That may be too late." "Hn?" "Remember about eight months ago, when I told you that Sally mentioned of a new location on Earth in Kyoto?" Trowa nodded as he recalled that morning in Heero's apartment. "It's up and almost ready to start running. They've already acquired several hundred recruits. She wants someone to transfer over there and supervise until everything's settled." "She wants you to go? Why you?" "I'm one of three that's most qualified. . .and of the three, I'm the one that can pick up and go a lot easier." Trowa stared at Heero's downcast features, trying to stop his mind from racing about a future without his best friend. Every word was true. There was a new location, and Sally had asked Heero first and foremost if he would take the task. Heero had already agreed that morning, figuring that whatever happened with Trowa, a new beginning would be needed. He only hoped that when the time comes, he would be purchasing two shuttle passes, instead of only one. "You're honestly going to accept?" "Well, it's not like I have family, or school commitments; nor can I really tell her 'no'. I guess the bright side is that there'll be pocky at every vendor there." It was a lame attempt at a joke. Neither men could muster a smirk. . .not that either found it at all humorous. "Are you doing this because of him?" Heero could feel Trowa's eyes watching him intently. Was it just him, or did Trowa sound a bit worried? "Maybe." Heero whispered softly while avoiding eye contact with his friend. "Running away isn't going to solve anything." "And I guess sitting around here doing nothing but thinking of him is?" "Have you tried talking to him?" "I can't get through to him. . .too much interference." A short silence followed before Trowa stepped closer and lowered his tone so that only Heero could hear him. "If you need me to help out in any way, don't hesitate to ask." Heero looked up at these words. The cold distant gaze in the green eyes was unmistakable; and he instantly realized what Trowa was really offering to do for him. "That won't be necessary." "You know there isn't anything I wouldn't do for you Heero." Heero nodded. "Wait here a sec." Confused, Heero watched as Trowa walked over to Yuki. They shared a few words, and Yuki glanced over at Heero quickly before nodding, shaking hands, and turning to leave. Trowa returned to him a moment later. "What was that about?" "I asked her if we could reschedule." "But your wedding-" "There's plenty of time for that." "Won't Quatre blow a gasket?" "Let him. In truth, I am sick of hearing and talking about nothing but this wedding." Heero smirked slightly. Just what he wanted to hear. He pushed from the wall and the two friends headed for the exit of the hall. Heero chuckled. "What?" "More and more you're starting to talk like him." Trowa looked over at his friend, wondering what 'him' that was being referred too. After all, Heero had yet to speak the name of the man mistress that broke his heart. "Who?" "Quatre. 'What prompt you to say such a thing'?" Heero mocked. "I was expecting you to blurt something else." "Like what? 'What the fuck are you talking about'?" "That sounds more like you." "So my every day vocabulary is reconstructing. Doesn't mean it's a bad thing." "It'll take some getting use to." They stepped into the sunny, perfect weather of the Colony. Everything was perfect, as it always seemed, and Heero remembered Trowa's statement of a few weeks ago; regarding the gravitational system malfunctioning. There was a small cafe half way down the block; it was their unspoken destination for a cup of coffee, and maybe a croissant. "Are you sure you're doing the right thing Trowa?" "How many times are you going to ask me that?" "Until I get a clear 'yes' or 'no' answer. You have a nasty habit of avoiding straight answers when you're unsure of something." "I've never been more sure of anything. You can relax." "Then you're not making a mistake?" "You're so persistent that sometimes it's annoying." "So is that a 'yes' or a 'no'?" Laughing, Trowa punched Heero's shoulder in a playful manner. Seeing this caused Heero to share in his laughter. It was the first either of them had done as such, since Trowa returned from Earth. They entered the cafe, and placed their order. A few moments later, they were seated in the furthest booth. "Trowa, as far as you know, is there anything that the Winner Foundation is working on that has selective memory lost?" Trowa set his mug on the table and stared profoundly at his friend, wondering where this question could have derived. "Not that I know of, why?" "Just wondering." Heero took a deep drink of his coffee. "There has to be a reason why you would ask that." "Do I really need to answer it?" Trowa understood the meaning; or at least he believed he did. "I don't think you should attempt forgetting what happened Heero." "If you were given the option and situation, would you?" Their eyes met and something in the depths of Heero's was shinning through more brightly than Trowa could remember. It worried him. The last thing he wanted was to see that look in Heero's eyes. He was hurting a lot more than what he was allowing to show. "I think I would be tempted. . .but I'm almost sure I wouldn't." Trowa reached over and cupped Heero's hand; a comforting touch meant only to console. "You have no ideal what it feels like to be in love with someone you can't have." "No. . .I don't." "What am I suppose to do?" "I wish I could tell you. Do you know how he feels about you?" "I know what he said. . .but right now, it doesn't matter." "How can it not matter? And why are you giving up? That's not like you." "Who said I've given up? Can we talk about something else?"
